Launch of book on fair trade - York Event
New author launches book in York
Founder of fair trade shop Shared Earth launched his book about fair trade at the Spurriergate Centre, York on Thursday 19th February. Jeremy Piercy wrote “Coffins, Cats and Fair Trade Sex Toys” to raise awareness of fair trade and its impact. The event was well attended with over 100 guests including the Mayor of York. Author, Jeremy Piercy, addressed the audience in true Jeremy style, light hearted and humorous with a serious real undertone.

The guests thoroughly enjoyed the event and over 50 books were sold throughout the evening. Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of York Councillor Brian Watson left with a copy and commented, “It’s a serious topic, a lot of people write it in a serious way and not a lot of people read it. If you can make it light hearted and write it in a comical way like Jeremy then it will appeal to more people.”
This unique book looks at fair trade through the practical eyes of someone actually trading within the industry as opposed to a journalist, academic or campaigner. It is hoped that the book will appeal to a new wider audience to raise the awareness of fair trade.
The book was launched to coincide with the Fair Trade Fortnight 23rd Feb. – 8th March. The York event was the first of many book signing events that will take place over the next month. The book has already proved its popularity with sales and orders already being taken from Australia, India, Europe, USA as well as the UK.
The evening was enjoyed by all with fair trade wine supplied by Shared Earth, chocolate, coffee and snacks courtesy of Divine Chocolate, Tropical Wholefoods and Starbucks.
“I think the evening has gone very well and I feel Jeremy is very brave taking on a topic like this. He is impressive and inspirational,” added Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of York Councillor Brian Watson.
