Stockport Fairtrade Group - Fairtrade Fair - 8th November 2008

SHARED EARTH will be holding a stall at the Stockport Fairtrade Group Fair on Saturday 8th November 2008.

10:30am - 3:30pm
Stockport College
Wellington Road
Stockport
SK1 3UQ

The group was formed in 2001, with a few of the founder members having worked in the Fairtrade Shop in Stockport. Over the next 2 years, members worked with Stockport Council, encouraging businesses to sell fairtrade products, resulting in Stockport becoming a fairtrade borough in 2003.

The annual Fair allows fairtrade companies a platform to showcase their products to the public in Stockport, whilst raising awareness of how Fairtrade works and who benefits from the products.

There will be over 25 stalls this year, and campaign stalls including Oxfam and Friends of the Earth.

There will be children’s activities, a raffle of fairtrade prizes and fairtrade refreshments.

Held at Stockport College, there is free parking and disabled access.

This Franchise is a good idea,” says Antony Warrall Thompson

Jeremy and Antony Warrall Thompson

Antony Worrall Thompson and Jeremy Piercy met recently to discuss future plans to work together. After leaving school in 1971 they are both leading successful careers: one as a celebrity chef and one ranked in the world’s top 100 most ethical people as founder of leading retail franchise, Shared Earth.

Jeremy Piercy plans to open several more fair trade stores over the next 3 years. Sales from all the combined stores could double UK-wide sales of non-food fair trade products by 2012. Great news for franchisees coming onboard!

Antony and Jeremy have also been discussing some exciting opportunities for joint fair trade and organic projects next year. The first of many includes Antony’s forward note in Jeremy’s forthcoming book about fair trade, titled Cats, Coffins and Fair Trade Sex Toys. Such developments will raise further awareness of the fair trade Mark which approximately 70% of UK consumers currently recognise according to the Fairtrade Foundation.

“The world-wide fair trade industry has been steadily growing for over 20 years. This growth is now starting to accelerate. The supermarkets have done wonders for this awareness through selling fair trade food, as have celebrities like Antony Warrall Thompson,” explains Shared Earth’s founder, Jeremy Piercy.

Antony backs Jeremy’s expansion plans and the Shared Earth franchise, “This franchise is a good idea. Shared Earth seem to have their business locked down through their supply chain by going direct to the artisan producers.

The franchise package aims to address the demand for fair trade products by making them more widely available in the UK through the franchise network of stores.
Training overseas - The franchise package allows buy-in to Shared Earth’s systems, methodologies and supply chain. Training includes an overseas trip to a developing country, such as India, to visit producer groups and see the impact of fair trade first hand.

Three of Shared Earth’s head office owned shops have opened within the last 3 years with substantial growth. The business format is unique in the fact that products are designed in the UK by Shared Earth’s dedicated design team who work with 40 producers in 15 countries to produce items that are highly saleable and suited to UK consumers.
Shared Earth is looking for individuals who have an interest in retail or come from a retail background. All training will be provided and the experience of visiting a developing country ensures that new franchisees fully understand why their role within fair trade is so important.

A selection of Shared Earth’s products can also be found online at www.sharedearth.co.uk. The product ranges include unique jewellery, fashion accessories, wood, textiles, paper, recycled products, soapstone, stationery and the range is continually expanding.

SHARED EARTH York wins “Retailers Against Crimes in York” award

SHARED EARTH York are runners up in the Independent Retailer Category of the Retailers Against Crime in York (RACY) initiative. The presentation was made at the RACY 10th Anniversary award ceremony.

SHARED EARTH is a member of RACY. RACY provides members with photos of active shoplifters in the city and security intelligence on current scams and frauds.

Members provide RACY with information on any sightings of known shoplifters, instore or in the area, any information on thefts from the store or criminal activity that they are aware of. This is then shared with other members to alert them of activity by criminals in the city.

Tammy Hullis, York Shop Manager received the award. “I was honoured to receive this award of recognition on behalf of SHARED EARTH,” said Tammy. “RACY do an incredible job and we appreciate all the hard work and effort their team, especially Michelle Sutcliffe, puts in to ensure traders in the city are aware of active shoplifters.”

Visit the RACY website for more information.

SHARED EARTH plans to open several more stores over the next year. The company launched the UKs very first fair trade franchise package in 2007 and sales from all the combined stores could double UK-wide sales of non-food fair trade products by 2012.

Fair trade products are becoming more widely available and increasing in popularity. An increase in consumer interest in fair trade has contributed to SHARED EARTH’s sales being 20 per cent up at the head office in York. The company’s Bristol store has recorded a 14 per cent increase, while average increase across all UK stores is seven per cent – and the trend is set to continue.

Awareness
“The worldwide fair trade industry has been steadily growing for over 20 years,” explains SHARED EARTH’s founder Jeremy Piercy. “This growth is now starting to accelerate. The supermarkets have done wonders for this awareness through selling fair trade food.”

Three in five British adults now recognise the fair trade mark, according to figures from the TNS Omnimas survey - and this number is rising. The SHARED EARTH franchise package aims to address the demand for fair trade products by making them more widely available in the UK through a franchise network of stores.

A selection of SHARED EARTH’s products can also be found online at www.sharedearth.co.uk.
